The New Crazy Detox Trend: Black Smoothies

Category : Food | Written by : Iris Pohl

It may look deceiving, but this smoothie has a wealth of benefits! Its great for detox, hangovers, upset tummies, bloating, cravings and food poisoning.

When you wake up feeling groggy, just add a couple of activated charcoal capsules to your morning smoothie. You will feel more clear-headed, less stressed and more energized throughout the day.

How does it work?

Charcoal is high in carbon and made from organic materials (often wood or coconut shells) that has been heated in order to be able to absorb even more than regular charcoal. Charcoal is a well-known remedy for absorbing toxins in the stomach. It binds toxins like pesticides and other chemicals found in food and is used by professionals for treating poisoning and drug overdose. It also does wonders beating bloating and gas.

How does it taste?

Don’t worry, your smoothie will still taste like a smoothie, it won’t take away from the taste and it also won’t mask it.

Thanks to this effect, you can add activated charcoal to just about any juice cleanse without having to worry about the taste. But don’t mix it with a lemon juice or any other kind of acidic beverage (orange juice, grapefruit juice). This can reduce the effect of the charcoal.

Is activated charcoal safe?

There’s no need to worry about the safety of activated charcoal, because your body doesn’t absorb it. It’s absolutely safe, natural and without side effects. Nevertheless, it’s not for a daily regular use. Activated charcoal binds with a number of things beyond toxins including healthy minerals and nutrients. Activated charcoal may also soak up the vitamins from food, so it doesn’t really make sense to drink green juice or smoothies with charcoal in them.

For this reason, you should space out your doses so that they don’t overlap with meals. Don’t drink your charcoal juice alongside other medication, this will avoid having the charcoal bind with your medication, which you don’t want.

Charcoal-Smoothie recipe:

  • 1 cup of coconut juice
  • 1 cup of pineapple chunks
  • 2 charcoal capsules or 1 tablespoon charcoal powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon of turmeric powder

Blend all until smooth. Enjoy!
